The more obvious of the two is a &#8220;sieving&#8221; mechanism. Particles too large to pass through the fabric mesh are captured and retained on the filter surface. Gradually the captured material will form a layer on the surface of the filter, which will increase in size and need to be removed regularly.<\/p>\n<p>The second mechanism called deep filtration is less obvious, but more important for extremely fine particles. It is for this reason that filters are made of a weave of fabrics rather than a single surface. The air flow and material particles are forced to pass through an extremely tortuous path.
